Graduate Studies - Current Students
Process of Graduation
For the M.S. Degree:
- Complete entire Core Curriculum (20 hours), 8 hours of electives, and 8 hours of 599.
- Complete both written and oral Qualifying Exam if you plan to enter the Ph.D. program.
- Register yourself for graduation on Enterprise when you register for classes or submit Application for Degree to Bioe Office.
- Review: Checklist for Master Degree Students.
- Complete Title Page check in Thesis Office.
- Submit Certificate of Committee Approval form to the Graduate College. (This must match the title page exactly.)
- Complete M.S. Thesis. Use the Thesis Handbook for formatting guidelines. The Grad College also offers Formatting Workshops.
- Eliminate Copyright issues: The new thesis publication agreement with ProQuest, the thesis publisher, requires that you get copyright permissions on previously published work. See: Publishing Your Graduate Work and Permission Forms and Information from the Grad College. It is important to resolve copyright issues well in advance of finishing the thesis. Unresolved copyright issues can delay thesis submission and graduation.
- Submit Thesis to Sam Smucker at the Bioe Office for Format Review - Please submit it at least one week ahead of Thesis Office deadline.
- Submit Thesis to the Thesis Office for Review. You must bring the Department Format Approval Form with you.
- Deposit thesis with Thesis Office
- Deposit bound thesis to Bioengineering Office: Thesis should be bound in black book cover with gold lettering on the spine. Include name, degree and year. (example: John R. Doe, M.S. ~ 2007). In Champaign-Urbana you can use Lincoln Bookbindery, 1601 N. Coler, Urbana. Phone 328-2613.

For the Ph.D. Degree:
- Complete 12 credit hours of coursework and 48 hours of BIOE 599.
- Register yourself for graduation on Enterprise when you register for class or submit Application for Degree to Bioe Office.
- Review: Checklist for Doctoral Degree Students.
- Request the appointment of Doctoral Exam Committee.
- Complete Title Page check in Thesis Office.
- Complete Dissertation. Use the Thesis Handbook for formatting guidelines. The Grad College also offers Formatting Workshops.
